A Leeds radio station has kickstarted a series of different initiatives aimed at budding DJs and writers in the city.

Chapel FM arts centre is a venue that hosts a number of different events and ongoing activities including a radio station, poetry, community plays, and writing workshops, to name but a few.

Recently, it brought together locals of all ages as part of their popular community play called ‘Save Our Stories’, which celebrated Seacroft’s ‘Home From Home’ spaces.

It has now launched a Radio and Podcast Story Gathering Group as part of the next phase of its Home From Home oral history project.

The course runs on Tuesdays, from April 18th until May 23rd, from 7.30pm-9pm.

As part of the course, participants will learn radio interview and hosting skills, as well as how to record and edit audio. Participants will also get a chance to enjoy some free food as part of its FoodCycle project, which offers free meals made with supermarkets’ discarded food for local consumption.

Chapel FM has also launched a free, new writing group on Wednesdays from 1pm-2.30pm. Budding writers can either join in person or on Zoom. It also hosts interviews from writers across Leeds as part of a show called ‘Love My Words’. Writers in Leeds have been encouraged to contact Chapel FM if they are interested in being featured on the show.

Chapel FM also hosts the Love My Words or Deli radio segments, where writers have been invited to share their ideas and projects.

There is also a writing festival in the pipeline for November, where locals will be invited to come and share ideas. Planning meetings for the Writing On Air 2023 festival are due to happen in mid to late July, where the theme for this year’s event will be set. Previous festivals have proved to be highly popular, with writers across Yorkshire setting the stage for an eclectic variety of programmes and workshops designed to stimulate the imaginations of readers.

Writers or would-be radio hosts that are interested in getting involved in any of the writing projects and workshops at Chapel FM, have been invited to email info@chapelfm.co.uk or email Peter Spafford, Director of Words at spaffordpeter@gmail.com
