Janine GriffithsA creative writing workshop and live radio broadcast exploring themes of transition, belonging and hope is taking place at Chapel FM in April. The event is a collaboration between the Remember Oluwale anti racist charity, Chapel FM community radio and arts centre, and Leeds Beckett University.
The workshop is part of the Chapel FM Writing on Air festival, which this year focuses on thresholds. It reflects on the life of David Oluwale, a Nigerian migrant who was pursued to his death by two Leeds police officers in 1969. His story sits at the heart of the session, which looks at lives lived between continents, identities and states of belonging.
Participants will write about liminal spaces and the moments of change that shape people’s lives. The event also reflects on the 10 meter Hibiscus Rising sculpture installed in Leeds in 2023, which reframes Oluwale’s story through a more hopeful lens.
The day will culminate in a live broadcast from Chapel FM’s radio theatre, with writers invited to share work created during the session.
The event will take place at Chapel FM, at Old Seacroft Chapel, 1081 York Road, Leeds LS14 6JB.
