Key dates announced ahead of elections on 7 May

Residents across Leeds are being urged to check they are ready to vote ahead of the local election on 7 May, with important deadlines now fast approaching.

Anyone not yet registered to vote must do so by midnight on 20 April. Registration takes around five minutes and can be completed online via the link listed at the end of this article.

Voters are also being encouraged to decide how they want to cast their ballot, whether in person, by post or by proxy. Changes introduced by the government mean that all registered postal voters were required to renew their details by the end of January to continue voting by post. The council has written to everyone who missed this renewal deadline to outline their options.

Those who were previously registered as postal voters but did not renew in time can still reapply. Applications must be completed before 5pm on 21 April.

Residents who prefer to vote by proxy, which allows someone trusted to vote on their behalf, must apply by 5pm on 28 April.

The council is reminding people that all key dates and instructions for registering, reapplying for postal voting or setting up a proxy vote can be found in the comments section of its update.

Support independent community journalism!

East Side Story covers the people, places and stories in Leeds that are too often overlooked. While national headlines chase conflict and clickbait, we focus on real communities and the issues shaping daily life in East Leeds.

Divisive content, AI noise and online rumours spread faster than ever. At the same time, many mainstream outlets are stretched and rarely spotlight the community organisations and local champions who deserve recognition.

East Side Story was created to change that. We answer only to our readers. We have no corporate owners or billionaire funders. Our journalists report freely, ask difficult questions and hold power to account.

Your support helps us keep this work going. Monthly contributions make the biggest impact because they allow us to invest in deeper reporting and fearless local journalism.

Supporters also receive exclusive updates, behind the scenes insights and other benefits as a thank you for keeping independent journalism alive.
