Two former employees of Leeds City Council have been arrested as part of a continuing police investigation into alleged bribery offences.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed that the two men were arrested on Thursday on suspicion of bribery, misconduct in a public office and money laundering. One of the men had previously been arrested in connection with the same inquiry.

Both men have since been questioned and released under investigation.

The investigation, which has previously been described as complex, is being led by West Yorkshire Police’s Economic Crime Unit.

Police said a total of 14 people have now been arrested as part of the inquiry. Three individuals have been released without charge, while the remaining suspects continue to be under investigation.

A spokesperson for Leeds City Council said the authority had been informed that the arrests involved two former members of its planning team.

They added: “No one currently employed by the council is being investigated as part of the inquiry.

“The public can be assured that we are absolutely committed to ensuring that all our staff adhere to the highest standards of professional and personal conduct.”

West Yorkshire Police said enquiries remain ongoing.
