About me
I’m Dawn, a local artist in East Leeds. I have lived in Leeds most of my life. I’ve always loved art, and my passion was re-ignited Covid-19 Pandemic lockdowns. I then decided to pursue my journey to be the best artist I can be.

What I do
I do a variety of art, mainly painting, photography and multimedia. Nature, urban, communities and animals are my main themes where inspiration is sought. I like to see my work reflect the contrast, the abstract and the juxtapositions. Colours are very important to me and I like to link them to either harmonise or contrast towards language, emotions and symbolism.

What I create with
I mainly paint with acrylics and gouache, the latter being my favourite medium. For multimedia work, I like to combine paint with photography, recycled materials and collage. I sometimes dabble with ink, pastels and watercolours.

Why I create
Being creative is very important to me. It solidifies who I really am, artistically and personally. It massively supports my mental health, reinforces the importance of mindfulness and keeps me grounded and motivated for what life brings to me.

My journey to date
I have self published two art zines which I’m very proud of, and it has inspired me to create many more!
You can find my work on Facebook and Instagram. Here are some of my works which have been exhibited and printed

I am available for commissions and most of my work is available for sale, either the original or print.

Current and future plans
I currently work as an ESOL Tutor and my future goal is to become a full time artist. However I would like to be involved with projects as a facilitator that combine both ESOL/language and arts with a wide range of groups and communities. I had the wonderful opportunity to work with The Highrise Project whose creative work reaches out to many communities, especially to participants whose first language isn’t English. It was nice to see how the participants we worked with are empowered and fulfilled creatively and linguistically. The Highrise Project hosts a collective art space in Armley on a Tuesday morning and is open to anyone who has a passion for creating all things arty.

I mainly work in East Leeds, but can work citywide.

Support independent community journalism!

East Side Story covers the people, places and stories in Leeds that are too often overlooked. While national headlines chase conflict and clickbait, we focus on real communities and the issues shaping daily life in East Leeds.

Divisive content, AI noise and online rumours spread faster than ever. At the same time, many mainstream outlets are stretched and rarely spotlight the community organisations and local champions who deserve recognition.

East Side Story was created to change that. We answer only to our readers. We have no corporate owners or billionaire funders. Our journalists report freely, ask difficult questions and hold power to account.

Your support helps us keep this work going. Monthly contributions make the biggest impact because they allow us to invest in deeper reporting and fearless local journalism.

Supporters also receive exclusive updates, behind the scenes insights and other benefits as a thank you for keeping independent journalism alive.
