East Leeds schoolboy Archie Boyne has celebrated a major achievement in his young boxing career, winning the Welsh Warehouse Box Cup in Neath. Competing in the 50-kilogram category, Archie defeated the reigning Welsh champion after two years of dedicated training with Charlie Hughes at United ABC in Garforth.

Hughes, 30, who established United ABC just a year ago, expressed his pride in Archie’s success. “He’s dedicated to the sport and committed to training three times a week. He’s as tough as old boots and never takes a backward step. Next year, he’ll be in the national junior finals and more box cups.”

Archie’s progress has been impressive. Earlier this year, he reached the national junior semi-finals, where he lost to a former national champion from London. Reflecting on his journey, Archie said, “I just love to fight and train hard – boxing is everything to me. United ABC have taught me so much. I want to be a national champion representing this club. I was in the top three nationally this year, but like all boxers, I want to be number one.”

Archie also shared his aspirations for the future, inspired by local boxing stars. “I’m hoping that I can eventually be a professional boxer and a champion. I’m inspired by other successful boxers from Leeds such as Josh Warrington and Jack Bateson. I know it will be hard work, but the sacrifices are all worth it when your hand is raised as winner.”

Archie’s mother, Nicola, is equally supportive of her son’s passion for the sport. “He’s a fitness fanatic,” she said. “When he’s not boxing, he loves going out on his bike with his mates or jogging to keep fit. Boxing is great for Archie, and I love how at United ABC they do so much for the youngsters.”

With rising talents like Archie and the dedication of clubs like United ABC, the proud Leeds boxing tradition shows every sign of continuing to thrive.
