A community litter pick that was originally scheduled for Saturday February 18th is now set to take place on Saturday February 25th.

Following reports of the tragic death of a 27-year-old man in Harehills, the litter pick has been delayed.

The aim of the event is to draw attention to the environmental hazards in Harehills and the failure of Leeds City Council to collect recycled bins along many of the streets and postcodes within the area.

Chijioke Ojukwu, organiser of the litter pick explained: “In light of the recent tragic murder in Harehills on Wednesday, we would like to reschedule the litter pick. This is because the designated areas that we planned to clean are near murder scene and could potentially obstruct the investigation. We also want to show respect for the young man whose life was brutally cut short by violence.”

The litter collection is expected to take an hour, and people will be encouraged to get lunch between 12.30pm and 2pm afterward.

Support independent community journalism!

East Side Story covers the people, places and stories in Leeds that are too often overlooked. While national headlines chase conflict and clickbait, we focus on real communities and the issues shaping daily life in East Leeds.

Divisive content, AI noise and online rumours spread faster than ever. At the same time, many mainstream outlets are stretched and rarely spotlight the community organisations and local champions who deserve recognition.

East Side Story was created to change that. We answer only to our readers. We have no corporate owners or billionaire funders. Our journalists report freely, ask difficult questions and hold power to account.

Your support helps us keep this work going. Monthly contributions make the biggest impact because they allow us to invest in deeper reporting and fearless local journalism.
