Police have launched an appeal for witnesses to come forward following the tragic death of a 27-year-old man found critically injured in Harehills.
The man was pronounced dead after being discovered shortly after 3 am on February 15th in Compton Road.
Forensic teams are on site, and the area has been cordoned off as an investigation gets underway.
Senior Investigating Officer, Damian Roebuck of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “We are currently in the early stages of our investigation, carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances of this incident. We would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed anything in the area of Compton Road in the early hours of this morning.
“We recognise that a serious incident such as this will cause understandable concern in the community and we are working closely with our colleagues in the Leeds District policing teams, including the local neighbourhood policing teams who are increasing their patrols and proactive work in the area to reassure people.”
Police have appealed for witnesses, and anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage taken in the area to come forward.
Following the incident, police have been given increased stop and search powers under a Section 60 order. The order came into effect at 2pm on Thursday February 15th.
Superintendent Russ Hughes of Leeds District Police said: “This order has been put in place due to concerns after the recent violent incidents in Harehills. These additional search powers give officers an increased ability to stop those involved in carrying weapons.
“This is about disrupting, deterring, and bringing to justice those who involve themselves in this type of criminal behaviour. Officers from the local neighbourhood policing team also continue to carry out increased patrols in the area to deter any further incidents and reassure the wider community. Below is a map highlighting the areas that are covered by the order.
The order will initially be put in place for a 24-hour period and will be subject to regular reviews.
