A local community group has joined a roster of amazing groups and individuals in the area doing some heavy lifting to keep Harehills clean.
The event took place on Saturday, February 25th, to draw attention to the environmental hazards in Harehills and the failure of Leeds City Council to collect recycled bins along many of the streets and postcodes within the area.
After the litter pick, volunteers then gathered to eat some food made by members of the community in Compton library.
However, this was no ordinary litter pick.
Chijioke Ojukwu, the organiser of the litter pick, said that the event also gave people from diverse backgrounds a chance to connect with each other. He added that the most memorable part of the event was stopping for a meal afterward and getting to know the other volunteers.
He added: “The litter pick gives people of different backgrounds a chance to connect with each other and discuss the issues affecting our community respectfully.
“It was good to be together and spend that time with one another after the litter collection. Events like these are useful for challenging prejudice and building trust.”

East Side Story covers the people, places and stories in Leeds that are too often overlooked. While national headlines chase conflict and clickbait, we focus on real communities and the issues shaping daily life in East Leeds.
Divisive content, AI noise and online rumours spread faster than ever. At the same time, many mainstream outlets are stretched and rarely spotlight the community organisations and local champions who deserve recognition.
