East End School teaches students a range of outdoor skills
May 10, 2025

In the heart of East End Park, something remarkable is taking root. Co-op Brierley, a brand-new specialist school on Cross Green Lane, is not just educating children with complex needs — it’s reimagining what a school can be.

With a focus on pupils aged 4 to 16 who face multiple and often profound barriers to learning, Co-op Brierley is offering more than just classrooms and curriculum. It’s building an environment where children — many of whom rarely leave their homes — can connect with the wider world in a way that’s safe, meaningful, and joyful.

The school’s ambitious new outdoor learning project is already drawing attention. Plans include a Forest School with climbing frames, den-building areas, and even a fire pit; a Horticulture Zone complete with a polytunnel, sensory herb garden, and story space; and a fully functioning Farm, where children will care for pygmy goats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and chickens.

“We are seeking support from businesses and individuals to offer materials, funding and hands-on building,” said Shahina Begum, Co-op Academy pioneer. “Our children and their families are extraordinary, they deserve the very best school offer we are able to give them and your help will make this possible.”

For many of the school’s pupils, who are transported in each day and may otherwise be isolated due to the severity of their needs, Co-op Brierley is more than a school — it’s a lifeline.

The curriculum centres around relationships, communication, and wellbeing — key pillars for young people with special educational needs. Movement is woven throughout every lesson, helping with physical development and sensory integration. Every learning experience is personalised, giving each child the tools they need to move towards independence and adulthood.

In a community where deprivation is a daily reality for many families, Co-op Brierley is determined to level the playing field. But to make its vision a reality, the school is calling on the community to get involved — with time, resources, or donations.

The hope is that this space will not only be a safe haven but a vibrant, living classroom where every child is empowered to achieve their “Brierley Best”.
