The Burton factory in Leeds was once the largest clothing site in the world. It was the biggest employer in the city and at its height, around 10,000 people worked there producing over 30,000 suits a week on a 40 acre site which included sports pitches.
A nearby business was Burmantofts Pottery which, when it closed, had 90 kilns running industry on 16 acres. Both have now closed and nearby areas have among the highest unemployment and deprivation in the city.
Development is now being considered for the former Burton’s site with 500 homes and some employment and social space. You can see all that’s proposed and discuss ideas by dropping in at the Community Learning Partnership (Burton Business Park, Hudson Road, Harehills, LS9 6DJ) on Thursday, 7 November anytime between 1pm-7pm or click here
