Local Leaders Call for Action on Knife Crime

Following a wave of violence that has shaken communities across the United Kingdom, a vital awareness event took place at St Aidan’s on May 23rd to confront the devastating realities of knife crime.

Initiated in response to a traumatic stabbing incident involving a young person in Manchester, the gathering served as an urgent call to action for the families and neighborhoods of East Leeds.

Driven by the reality that many children and adults remain uninformed about the true dangers and long-term consequences of carrying weapons, the initiative focused heavily on education and proactive youth engagement.

Rohie N’Dow, president of the Senegalese Community Leeds, highlighted the systemic scope of the issue, stating, “There has been quite a few incidents in the community across Leeds and UK, and this is affecting a lot of young people, communities and families. So, some children and adults, don’t always know much about knife crime”.

The inspiration behind bringing this movement directly into Leeds stems from tragedies outside the immediate area, which highlighted the critical need for local preparation.

To ensure the information delivered was accurate and impactful, the event hosted a diverse panel of professional figures. The event included a talk by police, representatives from Youth Justice who came specifically to work with the younger demographic and Leeds United Foundation.

Local political figures underscored the necessity of keeping this dialogue alive continuously rather than treating it as a brief reaction to a single crisis. Representing the Burmantofts and Richmond Hill Ward in East Leeds, local councillors Nkele Manaka and Luke Farley attended the event.

Commenting on the event, councillor Manaka said: “It’s very important that we keep up the conversation about knife crime and what can be done to ensure that kids are not involved in these things. As local  leaders we are here to support initiatives that curb knife crime.”

The overarching message of the event was that knife crime is an issue that crosses all cultural and geographic boundaries. To spark lasting change, the initiative called for unprecedented unity across all diverse groups in Leeds, ensuring that the burden of safety is shared equally.

Rohie explained: “Raising awareness on a regular basis is very important. So we want to involve as many communities as possible, and the young people from these communities, because these are not just isolated incidents, it’s affecting all communities. Let’s get together, and talk, because we want to make a difference to the community by raising awareness.”
