WRITING ON AIR 2023 by Peter Spafford

Writing On Air is an annual festival of words and ideas on the radio. Broadcast from Chapel FM Arts Centre in Seacroft, East Leeds, Writing On Air usually features over fifty programmes, all created by local writers and writing groups with the support of the Chapel FM team, and involving over two hundred writers, actors, musicians and other performers. We’re in our 7th year!

Drama, soundscape, performance, debate, programmes for WOA come in all forms. Each festival has carried a theme: Borderlands, Vision, Voice, Home. This year’s is Missing. The lost and found; what and who is missing from the table, our politics, our lives, from the world? What must we preserve at all costs?

Though most of the writers and performers who take part in Writing On Air are from Leeds and Yorkshire, we’ve always featured international writers, particularly from Dortmund, Germany, one of Leeds’ sister cities. This year we’re working with writers in Kharkiv in Ukraine which is amazing for us.

We’re also keen to involve as many people as possible from our local community in East Leeds. If you’re a poet, keen reader, or someone who wants to volunteer for our cafe, or on the technical side, please do get in touch. Email Peter Spafford, Director of Words at Chapel FM: peter@chapelfm.co.uk

Support independent community journalism!

East Side Story covers the people, places and stories in Leeds that are too often overlooked. While national headlines chase conflict and clickbait, we focus on real communities and the issues shaping daily life in East Leeds.

Divisive content, AI noise and online rumours spread faster than ever. At the same time, many mainstream outlets are stretched and rarely spotlight the community organisations and local champions who deserve recognition.

East Side Story was created to change that. We answer only to our readers. We have no corporate owners or billionaire funders. Our journalists report freely, ask difficult questions and hold power to account.

Your support helps us keep this work going. Monthly contributions make the biggest impact because they allow us to invest in deeper reporting and fearless local journalism.

Supporters also receive exclusive updates, behind the scenes insights and other benefits as a thank you for keeping independent journalism alive.
