New footbridges will be installed near Garforth Station as part of a significant improvement project under the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU). The initiative aims to replace several level crossings, including those at Barrowby Lane and Barrowby Foot, with safer pedestrian pathways, ensuring better safety and accessibility.

The project, which has secured approval through a Transport and Works Act Order, will also see modifications to the historic Crawshaw Woods bridge, allowing for electrification along the route. These changes are expected to enhance the speed and frequency of services between Leeds and Micklefield, promoting more efficient travel options.

Network Rail is leading the effort, which is part of a broader goal to modernize and upgrade the railway infrastructure across the region. Speaking about the project, Adam Sellers, Senior Sponsor on TRU, told the YEP: “This is a huge success for TRU, bringing us a step closer to delivering faster, more frequent trains on a more reliable railway.

“We would like to thank our rail industry partners for their support in getting this TWAO approval, and look forward to continuing to work with them on the next stages of work in this area.”

The introduction of these footbridges is seen as a key step in future-proofing the rail network, promoting safety and convenience for both rail passengers and the local community.
