Let’s keep our community safe and spread the awareness that Measles is on the rise in HarehIlls.

That’s the message from Councillor Salma Arif (Lab, Gipton and Harehills), who is urging people to get the MMR vaccine, if they have not already done so.

“It’s been a number of weeks now,” said Cllr Arif. “Public health data shows us measles are on the rise and it is important for us to understand the symptoms of measles and how we can protect ourselves.

“If measles are not treated it could be very dangerous for children and pregnant women in particular.

“What’s important is that you are vaccinated against measles, and for that we’ve got the MMR vaccination. The good news is we are having sessions in the community for residents who are not vaccinated to get vaccinated.

“If you know anybody who isn’t vaccinated please encourage them to do so.”

Sessions include:

Symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose and a rash all over the body. Being vaccinated is the best way to prevent getting sick with measles or spreading it to other people. More details on measles can be found here.

East Side Story covers the people, places and stories in Leeds that are too often overlooked. While national headlines chase conflict and clickbait, we focus on real communities and the issues shaping daily life in East Leeds.

Divisive content, AI noise and online rumours spread faster than ever. At the same time, many mainstream outlets are stretched and rarely spotlight the community organisations and local champions who deserve recognition.
