Two Leeds MPs have called on Reform UK leader Nigel Farage to apologise for a social media post about the troubles in Harehills last night.
Farage had taken to ‘X’ to post that the “politics of the subcontinent are playing out on the streets of Leeds tonight. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
Leeds Central and Headingley MP Alex Sobel responded: “This is a situation you know nothing about and no one has briefed you on. You are inflaming a situation with misinformation. Politicians have a responsibility to not exacerbate situations particularly with no knowledge of them. I expect you to issue an apology.”
Leeds East MP Richard Burgon said: “Since getting back to Leeds from Parliament late tonight I’ve been speaking with Harehills residents affected by today’s very serious incidents. They care passionately about their community. They want the disorder to end. They want those pushing misinformation from afar to stop.”
Chief executive of Hope Not Hate Nick Lowles today accused Mr Farage of making “cheap political attacks from America”.
The disturbances started as officers were called to Luxor Street at about 5pm on Thursday due to an “ongoing disturbance” involving agency workers and children.
