A workshop aimed at encouraging older women to explore journalism skills took place last Thursday, at the Compton Centre in Harehills.
The Harehills Creative women’s group is part of The Performance Ensemble, a Leeds based theatre company that creates art and performances with people over the age of 60. The workshops encourage creativity among older women, leading to performances at local events like the recent Climate Action Assembly Fashion Show.

East Side story’s co editor Janine Griffiths joined with the group to find out what older women want to read about in local news.
The session sparked lively discussion, with participants opening up about the challenges they face both as residents and older women. Common themes included community safety, a need for more disability awareness, missed bin collections, lack of support for domestic violence victims, transport problems in East Leeds, such as poor service for disabled people on public transport, and blocked pedestrian areas.
The women shared their experiences of difficulties navigating the voting and political system, barriers towards people with disabilities in accessing essential services, and a feeling of not being listened to when raising concerns. Everyone spoke passionately about how local community groups combat marginalisation by offering a platform for self-expression and ensuring voices are heard.
Participants also enjoyed a basic photography session, which led to an interesting discussion on how images send a powerful message in the media.
Joanna, one of the members of the group said that the sessions are one of the few places she feels valued, adding: “Even when I’m struggling with overwhelming issues such as anxiety, depression and can barely face leaving the house, I feel safe enough to come here. The group has helped me make friends and has given me confidence to speak up, try new things and take part in events.”
Natalie, one of the group’s facilitators, praised the workshops success, saying, “It always feels powerful to hear women share their stories, and steer their own narrative about aging and living in Harehills. This workshop demonstrates what The Performance Ensemble and East Side Story are all about—providing platforms for people to highlight what matters most to them, and turning life experiences into creative expression.”
Our East Side Story Introduction to Community Reporting workshops typically include exercises on putting a story together, interviewing skills, the power of journalism, and how to take a captivating photo. The sessions inspire more people to narrate their own news, identify local issues and celebrate local culture and events.
By providing community members with the tools and confidence to make their voices heard, the workshops empower people to highlight some of the key issues impacting their lives.
