A road which runs through a picturesque part of Leeds is to be closed to traffic for the first ever community Green Fair to be held – and residents from East Leeds are cordially invited to attend.
Gledhow Valley Road, which runs between Chapel Allerton and Roundhay, will be closed to traffic for a few hours and a fair will be staged to celebrate the work by volunteers to preserve the nature of the area and highlight pressures on the environment.
The Green Fair will take place on Sunday 14 July, and organisers says it will be a unique opportunity for the local community to come together to enjoy Gledhow Valley Woods without the noise, pollution and safety concerns associated with the busy road.
Activities planned for the day, which is free to attend, include an urban flower and produce show, bike rides, free bike repairs, a treasure hunt for children, nature walks, street games, a pop-up café and lots of community stalls.
There will be a special opening of the Gipton Spa, Bath House and Beck Pasture wildflower meadow and there will be lots of entertainment throughout the day including a community choir, steel pans and performances by Balbir Singh Dance Company.
There will also be information on potential future plans for the Gledhow Valley and an opportunity for local people to have their say.
The Green Fair is being organised by a partnership group of long-established community groups, including the Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods, CANplan, C A Spaces, Gledhow Valley Conservation Area Group, Balbir Singh Dance Company and Roundhay Environmental Action Project.
Martin Calvert, Chair of the Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods, said; “The Green Fair will bring the community together for an enjoyable day out where people can learn more about the environmental challenges we face and the responses we are making as a local community. We very much hope people will be able to join us for the day.”
Organisers are hopeful there will be a big turnout for the Green Fair will take place Sunday 14th July between 11am and 4pm.
The day is funded by Climate Action Leeds, a five-year programme funded by The National Lottery Climate Action Fund to help shape a Leeds which is zero carbon, nature friendly and socially just by the 2030s.
