Gipton is set to shine bright this festive season as the community comes together for the annual Festive Lights Switch-On at The Old Fire Station on Friday 28th November, from 5:30pm to 7:30pm – with the big switch-on at 7pm.

The much-loved community hub will be transformed into a warm and welcoming space filled with live performances, family activities, and refreshments, bringing together residents young and old for an evening full of laughter and celebration. There’s even a special visit from everyone’s favourite Elf, guaranteed to bring extra festive magic for the little ones.

Funded by local councillors Salma Arif and Asghar Ali, the event promises to be a heartwarming celebration of community spirit in the heart of East Leeds.

Speaking ahead of the event, organisers said they were delighted to host this year’s switch-on at The Old Fire Station, adding: “Join us for an evening full of warmth, laughter, and holiday spirit as we light up the area and mark the beginning of the celebrations.”

The evening aims to not only light up the streets but also the hearts of local residents, providing a space for families, friends, and neighbours to connect and celebrate the start of the festive season together.

Residents are encouraged to wrap up warm, bring their festive spirit, and join in the countdown to the moment the lights sparkle to life.

Support independent community journalism!

East Side Story covers the people, places and stories in Leeds that are too often overlooked. While national headlines chase conflict and clickbait, we focus on real communities and the issues shaping daily life in East Leeds.

Divisive content, AI noise and online rumours spread faster than ever. At the same time, many mainstream outlets are stretched and rarely spotlight the community organisations and local champions who deserve recognition.

East Side Story was created to change that. We answer only to our readers. We have no corporate owners or billionaire funders. Our journalists report freely, ask difficult questions and hold power to account.

Your support helps us keep this work going. Monthly contributions make the biggest impact because they allow us to invest in deeper reporting and fearless local journalism.

Supporters also receive exclusive updates, behind the scenes insights and other benefits as a thank you for keeping independent journalism alive.
