Residents in East Leeds will have more options to get around on Boxing Day, as extra bus services are set to run across West Yorkshire.
More than 90 services will operate on Friday 26 December, with buses running between 9am and 6pm on selected routes serving main town and city centres, hospitals and shopping centres. The additional services are expected to help people travelling for work, visiting family or heading out to the sales, without relying on cars.
The move is being funded through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Bus Service Improvement Plan. The services will run up to every 30 minutes, providing added flexibility and connectivity for people heading in and out of Leeds and surrounding areas.
Single tickets will be capped at £2.50 under the Mayor’s Fares scheme, with MCards, Senior, Disabled and Blind Person’s passes all valid, along with individual bus operator season tickets. Passengers making three or more journeys will also be able to save money with a £6 MCard DaySaver.
West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin said: “We all love the festive period, and Boxing Day is often a time for people to visit loved ones, hit the sales or go to sporting fixtures, while others need to be back at work.
“That’s why we’re funding vital bus services to keep West Yorkshire moving, helping people get to where they need to be.
“This shows our commitment to creating a greener, better-connected region that works for all.”
With limited public transport available on Boxing Day most years, the improved bus offering is expected to support people travelling across the region, including those in East Leeds who rely on public transport during the festive period.
