People living with lung conditions across East Leeds are being offered a chance to improve their breathing, boost confidence and connect with others through a new Singing for Lung Health programme at The Old Fire Station in Gipton.

Delivered by Opera North in partnership with Leeds Local Care Partnerships, the supportive and enjoyable sessions are designed to help people breathe better and feel better using gentle breathing techniques, guided singing and relaxed group activities.

The workshops are aimed at adults aged 18 and over who live with conditions such as COPD, asthma, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease and long-COVID. No previous singing experience is needed.

Sessions focus on friendly, guided singing to support better breathing, gentle movement and breathing techniques to help manage breathlessness, and opportunities to meet others and build confidence. There is no pressure to perform or sing solo, with the emphasis firmly on enjoyment and wellbeing.

Workshops will take place on Wednesdays from 11:00am to 12:30pm at The Old Fire Station, Gipton Approach, Gipton, Leeds, LS9 6NL. Dates are January 28, February 11 and 25, and March 4, 11 and 18, 2026. The venue offers free on-site parking at the front and rear and is easily accessible by public transport.

Sessions are led by experienced singing leader Marie Claire, who guides participants with warmth, humour and encouragement, helping people discover the joy and health benefits of singing.

To find out more or book a place, contact Opera North’s Community Engagement team at lifelonglearning@operanorth.co.uk or call 07960 856691.

Organisers say the goal is simple: help make East Leeds a healthier place to live by supporting people to breathe better, feel better and connect through the power of music.

Support independent community journalism!

East Side Story covers the people, places and stories in Leeds that are too often overlooked. While national headlines chase conflict and clickbait, we focus on real communities and the issues shaping daily life in East Leeds.

Divisive content, AI noise and online rumours spread faster than ever. At the same time, many mainstream outlets are stretched and rarely spotlight the community organisations and local champions who deserve recognition.

East Side Story was created to change that. We answer only to our readers. We have no corporate owners or billionaire funders. Our journalists report freely, ask difficult questions and hold power to account.

Your support helps us keep this work going. Monthly contributions make the biggest impact because they allow us to invest in deeper reporting and fearless local journalism.

Supporters also receive exclusive updates, behind the scenes insights and other benefits as a thank you for keeping independent journalism alive.
