Construction has begun on a new development of 23 energy-efficient homes in Killingbeck, bringing additional low-cost social housing to East Leeds.

Housing association Connect Housing has broken ground on the scheme at Killingbeck Bridge in partnership with Cubed Group. The development will include a mix of one, two and three-bedroom homes available for low-cost social rent.

The project is being part funded by Homes England through the Government’s Social and Affordable Homes Programme.

As part of Connect Housing’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions, the new homes will feature solar panels and low-carbon heating systems.

The homes are expected to be completed by Autumn 2027, with future residents selected through the Leeds Homes bidding system.

Representatives from Killingbeck and Seacroft ward joined local residents and project partners at a groundbreaking event to mark the start of construction. Those attending included councillors Katie Dye, David Jenkins and David Dresser, along with Leeds East MP Richard Burgon.

Richard Burgon MP said: “I’m delighted that Connect Housing are building these much-needed new homes for low-cost rent for local people in my constituency. East Leeds is a fantastic place to live, but like most places across Leeds there is a housing shortage, and affordable new homes in appropriate places are an important way to meet that need in our community.”

He added: “It’s fantastic that this new development is going to be for social rent, supported by the government Social and Affordable Homes Programme, and I’m looking forward to coming back again next year to celebrate the completion of the new scheme and to meet the new residents.”

Martyn Broadest, Director of Home at Connect Housing, said the organisation was pleased to be expanding its housing offer in the area.

He said: “We are so pleased to be working with Cubed Group on this exciting new development. Connect already provides homes for many hundreds of families across East Leeds and we are delighted to be adding to that offer with this new scheme at Killingbeck Bridge.”

Mr Broadest added that the organisation was grateful for support from Homes England and said the development is believed to be among the first schemes in Leeds to be delivered through the Government’s commitment of £39 billion towards new social housing over the next decade.
