Literacy Charity Appeals for Volunteers in Seacroft

A national literacy charity is calling on people in Seacroft to volunteer just one afternoon a week to help primary school children become more confident readers.

Coram Beanstalk is recruiting volunteer Reading Helpers for schools across Leeds and says local volunteers can make a “real difference” to children’s confidence, school progress and future opportunities.

The charity is encouraging community-minded residents and businesses in Killingbeck and Seacroft to help spread the word about the opportunity, saying volunteers from the local area can have a powerful impact on children’s reading development.

According to the charity’s campaign materials, volunteers help children “understand the joy of reading” through sharing books, talking and having fun during reading sessions.

The role involves supporting primary-aged children with reading during term time, with volunteers asked to commit around one afternoon each week.

No teaching experience is needed.

Coram Beanstalk says volunteers simply need time, patience and a love of reading. Full training, DBS checks and ongoing support are provided.

The organisation is also asking local businesses, organisations and community groups in Seacroft to help promote the volunteer opportunity through social media, newsletters or by displaying posters and flyers.

The charity says even small amounts of local promotion can help reach people who may not otherwise hear about the chance to volunteer.

Campaign materials from Coram Beanstalk state that 99% of volunteers would recommend the experience to a friend.

For more information, people can visit the Coram Beanstalk website or contact the charity directly on 020 7729 4087.
