Police and partner agencies have taken action against unsafe vehicles and environmental offences in Gipton and Harehills as part of a coordinated effort to improve road safety and clean up local streets.

The operation, led by the West Yorkshire Police neighbourhood policing team, brought together officers from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency and Leeds City Council’s environmental crime team. It was carried out in response to concerns raised by residents about dangerous driving and illegal waste activity.

During the day of action, a number of vehicles were stopped and checked. Inspectors identified 11 vehicles with serious faults that posed an immediate risk, leading to all of them being taken off the road.

Further checks focused on waste being transported through the area. Officers examined 14 vehicles to ensure drivers had the correct licences to carry waste, with enforcement action taken two drivers unable to provide the necessary documentation.

Police also dealt with a range of other offences, including seizing a vehicle being driven without insurance and issuing penalties for seatbelt violations, dangerous vehicle conditions and overloaded vehicles. In one case, a vehicle was found to be carrying significantly more weight than legally allowed, resulting in an on-the-spot fine and the driver being forced to reduce their load before continuing.

Officers say the operation is part of an ongoing programme of targeted enforcement across the ward, aimed at tackling the issues that matter most to local communities. Further patrols and joint operations are expected as agencies continue to work together to improve safety and reduce environmental harm.

Residents are being encouraged to report dangerous driving and fly-tipping to help support future action and keep neighbourhoods safe.
