Plans for a new all weather sports pitch in Chapeltown could give young people across East Leeds more opportunities to play sport throughout the year.

Chapeltown Youth Development Centre has submitted a planning application to install a floodlit 3G artificial grass pitch at its site on Scott Hall Avenue. If approved, the facility would be used for football and rugby and form part of the wider Scott Hall playing fields area.

A design report submitted as part of the application says the pitch would help address an under supply of sporting facilities locally and support grass roots football. It also highlights wider health benefits for the community.

“It will also promote increased physical activity and improved mental well being to support healthier lifestyles,” according to the report, which stated: “Once implemented, the facilities will provide opportunities for more people to be more active, more often.”

The site is used by several organisations, including Chapeltown Youth Development Centre, and sits next to the Leeds Caribbean Cricket Club off Scott Hall Road. The report says the proposed pitch has been designed to fit in with its surroundings: “It is sympathetic to its surroundings, avoiding any unacceptable impact on adjacent public areas or residential neighbours.”

The report also points to a shortage of 3G artificial pitches across Leeds, which can limit training and match opportunities during poor weather.

“The proposed AGP will enhance football and rugby activities at Chapeltown Youth Development Centre, meeting local demand for artificial pitches,” it stated.

Leeds City Council is currently considering the full planning application, which is open for public consultation until February 17.
