A Harehills charity is looking for volunteers to help boost literacy and language skills among children from some of the most deprived areas in Leeds.
Led by Community Learning Partnerships, their Let’s Read programme recognises the impact poor literacy can have on young lives and aims to address the link between deprivation and poor educational attainment. Since 1991, the charity has been helping thousands of children, young people and adults through its learning initiatives and is also asking local schools and businesses to get involved.
Let’s Read will help children who are most in need of support to become more confident in their reading abilities, so that they stand the best chance of accessing the education they deserve and achieving their full potential, both at school and beyond. Reading volunteers would be asked to:
- Visit a nominated school for an hour a week, providing one-to-one support
- Commit to the programme for one school year
- Complete the necessary training and undergo an enhanced DBS check
- Foster a positive attitude to literacy and learning
- Act as a positive role model
