Have coats collecting dust in your wardrobe? Give them a new lease on life and help keep your East Leeds neighbours warm this winter!

The Leeds Winter Coat Appeal, run by Zero Waste Leeds, is making its last call for donations and needs your help to reach its goal of distributing over 6500 items of free winter clothing. With the cost of living crisis putting a strain on many families, a warm coat can make a world of difference.

Donate at one of these East Leeds locations before Friday, January 26th:

  • Burmantofts Community Hub & Library
  • Kentmere Community Centre
  • Seacroft Community Hub & Library
  • Halton Medical Practice
  • Halton Library
  • Crossgates & Whinmoor Community Hub
  • Garforth Library & One Stop Centre
  • Garforth Leisure Centre
  • Kippax Community Hub

“People in Leeds are so generous,” says Gill Coupland from Zero Waste Leeds. “We’ve seen a real increase in donations since Christmas, and we’re asking for one last rummage to find good quality items.”

Not just coats are needed! Hats, gloves, scarves, waterproof clothing, and fleeces are also welcome. Plus, this year, they’re looking for baby cot sleeping bags, snowsuits for young children, and footmuffs to keep little ones warm.

“Sharing donated coats means we can help ease some of the financial pressure on families,” explains Gill. “And passing on unworn clothes is much more sustainable than buying new. Let’s show East Leeds’s true spirit and spread warmth this winter!”

Every donation, big or small, makes a difference. So open those wardrobes, gather your gently used winter wear, and head to one of the collection points before Friday. Together, we can ensure no one in East Leeds goes cold this winter!

Support independent community journalism!

East Side Story covers the people, places and stories in Leeds that are too often overlooked. While national headlines chase conflict and clickbait, we focus on real communities and the issues shaping daily life in East Leeds.

Divisive content, AI noise and online rumours spread faster than ever. At the same time, many mainstream outlets are stretched and rarely spotlight the community organisations and local champions who deserve recognition.

East Side Story was created to change that. We answer only to our readers. We have no corporate owners or billionaire funders. Our journalists report freely, ask difficult questions and hold power to account.

Your support helps us keep this work going. Monthly contributions make the biggest impact because they allow us to invest in deeper reporting and fearless local journalism.

Supporters also receive exclusive updates, behind the scenes insights and other benefits as a thank you for keeping independent journalism alive.
