The running community of East Leeds has come together to raise funds to resurface a track which is currently full of potholes and weeds.

Crossgates Harriers and St Theresa’s Athletic Club want to raise enough money to restore the Temple Newsam running track to its former glory. They see the track as a real benefit to the running community but also young people learning to ride a bicycle and taking a run in a safe environment.

First opening in 1954, the Temple Newsam cinder track was once the main athletics facility for the city of Leeds and was available for all members of the public to use. The eight-lane circuit has historically hosted largescale local meets, but it’s been left to disrepair for the last 30 years

A spokesperson said: “The full monies gained by this crowdfunding project will pay for a contractor to resurface the track which is currently full of potholes and weeds.  Volunteers have cleared much of the extra soil and weeds from the surface.  Making the surface look better but still potholed.

“The local running clubs are voluntary groups and non profit making.  We have very limited funds and certainly not to resurface the track.  We have full support from the local authority (Leeds City Council) who have assisted us in some resources and we work as a partnership.”

Their appeal has so far raised more than £13,000.
