Plans Revealed for New Footbridge Linking Whinmoor to Cross Gates Station

A new footbridge with lift access could be on the way for Cross Gates Station, as fresh plans show proposals for upgraded entrances, improved accessibility and better links from the nearby car park and Station View.

The design drawings – now submitted to Leeds City Council – outline a modern 400-series footbridge with a lift shaft serving Platform 1, new stair access, improved lighting and updated signage. The proposals also include a rearranged seating area, a relocated cycle shelter and a refurbished waiting space, along with new telecoms posts and CCTV.

If approved, the scheme would significantly improve access for passengers travelling to and from Whinmoor, offering step-free routes across the station and a safer, clearer connection via the proposed bridge.

The plans also show the creation of additional entrances to the footbridge, a new lift plant room beneath the stairs, and changes to fencing and layout around the platforms to support the redevelopment.

Residents and rail users are being encouraged to look at the full application and leave feedback through the council’s planning portal.

East Side Story covers the people, places and stories in Leeds that are too often overlooked. While national headlines chase conflict and clickbait, we focus on real communities and the issues shaping daily life in East Leeds.

Divisive content, AI noise and online rumours spread faster than ever. At the same time, many mainstream outlets are stretched and rarely spotlight the community organisations and local champions who deserve recognition.
