The former owner of a reiki practice in Cross Gates is one of the people behind plans for a new charity on the other side of Leeds. Paul Abraham reports.

Tucked away only yards from the busy Broad Lane junction with Waterloo Lane in Bramley is an holistic oasis which has so far been under the radar of many people in West Leeds.

The Healing House offers a wide range of treatments, workshops and expertise to anyone feeling the pressures of the modern world or needing some advice for a richer, calmer, and more fulfilling life.

Hannah Calvert took on the Herculean task of creating something special from a dilapidated unit within the St Catherine’s Mill Complex into a holistic oasis where the calm ambience as you step into the room is a refreshing escape from the techno, fast-paced and loud existence we have to try and cope with on a day-to-day basis.

Work started on the unit in July of 2020. While Prime Minister Boris Johnson was making statements about Covid and “Lockdown” Hannah and her team worked tirelessly to create a special meeting and healing location in place for when the restrictions were lifted. With a maximum of six people allowed in at any one time the doors were officially opened in October 2020.

During the summer of 2023 Hannah had come to a crossroads as with the cost of living crisis biting harder, the venture was becoming increasingly difficult to keep viable. It was then that a chance re-connection with Leanne Kift, who had just had to move from her Reiki practice based in Crossgates, created a fusion of energy and ideas to join forces and create something very unique and special. The Healing House had been born!

Going from strength to strength the plan now, with the help and support of a board of directors and experienced trustees, is to obtain charity status either as a CIO or CIC, which would then open avenues of funding to enable treatments and workshops to be available to the most vulnerable within the community, who would not normally have the funds or opportunities to seek out holistic alternatives for their various needs and requirements.

Open days are held each month, and these offer the chance for interested and/or inquisitive individuals or families to chat to the various facilitators and healers and take up the option of having a sampler”session of various treatments with just a donation however large or small being asked to help towards the cost of running the event.

The open days are usually on the first or second Saturday of each month. The next event is being sponsored by West Leeds company Heading Onwards, who have recently become involved with the organisation after being impressed with the culture and ethos of everyone involved at the “house”.

Everyone involved at the Healing House are fully qualified, insured and DBS checked to allow people to attend with confidence and a feeling of being in a very safe environment. Over the next few months, the venue intends to expand its treatments with practitioners from across the country hosting workshops and sessions there on a regular basis.
