A litter pick that aims to build the bridges of friendship and harmony in Harehills is set to take place on February 18th.
The initiative has been kickstarted by Harehills resident Chijioke Ojukwu as part of a bid to keep the district clean.
Volunteers are set to meet at Compton Library between 11am and 2pm to help clear the area behind the library.
The litter pick also aims to draw attention to the environmental hazards in Harehills and the failure of Leeds City Council to collect recycled bins along many of the streets and postcodes within the area.
Chijioke has encouraged anyone that wants to join the litter pick to take part. He said: “I am hoping that it provides an opportunity for local people to build a bridge of trust and friendship with one another.
“I recognise that the ecological decay in Harehills, particularly the lack of recycled bins, is a bigger structural inequality that we need to tackle together, but hoping that we can begin with small steps taken with big love and humility.”
The litter collection is expected to take an hour, and people will be encouraged to get lunch between 12.30pm and 2pm afterward.

East Side Story covers the people, places and stories in Leeds that are too often overlooked. While national headlines chase conflict and clickbait, we focus on real communities and the issues shaping daily life in East Leeds.
Divisive content, AI noise and online rumours spread faster than ever. At the same time, many mainstream outlets are stretched and rarely spotlight the community organisations and local champions who deserve recognition.
East Side Story was created to change that. We answer only to our readers. We have no corporate owners or billionaire funders. Our journalists report freely, ask difficult questions and hold power to account.
