Janine GriffithsWhile the FIFA World Cup has showcased football on the global stage, a community tournament in Harehills demonstrated how the sport can also unite neighbours in support of a family facing tragedy.
The tournament, titled From Harehills With Love: In Loving Memory of Clara, took place at Dixon Trinity Chapeltown Sport Centre on Roundhay Road.
It was held in support of Vasile Poataca, a Romanian immigrant whose loved one, Clara Dumitrascu, died, leaving behind her husband and their two children. Proceeds from the event were used to raise money towards her funeral costs.
Organised by community activist Chijioke Ojokwu and Leeds Roma community representative Andrei Cioclu, the tournament united residents from diverse backgrounds, including many asylum seekers and refugees.
Andrei said the family had been part of the Leeds community for many years and wanted people to know they were not facing their loss alone.
He said: “This tournament is our way of coming together through the sport we all love to get the community to stand beside them, help raise funds and let them know they are not alone.” He added: “We want to show that our community cares deeply, and that we will walk this hard road alongside them.”
Following the event, Vasile expressed his gratitude to everyone who had supported his family.
He said: “Thank you to everyone who supported my family from the bottom of my heart.”
Chijioke praised the response from players, volunteers and supporters. He also congratulated Slobozia FC on winning the tournament and Team Ifarada on finishing second.
He added: “The tournament was wonderful. There was great community spirit and support from folks. I’m really glad it went well.”
Chijioke also thanked everyone who attended and paid tribute to Andrei’s efforts in organising the day.
