The remarkable stories of women connected to the fire service, spanning more than 80 years, will be celebrated at a special event in Gipton next month.

The Trailblazers showcase will take place at The Old Fire Station on Wednesday 4 November, bringing together stories of courage, community and women’s contributions to history.

The event marks three years of research and storytelling by East Leeds community organisation Space2 and Leeds Beckett University.

Their joint project, Trailblazers, has explored the experiences of women connected to the fire service and their communities, from the Second World War to the present day.

Through research, creative performances and community events, the project has helped uncover and share stories that span generations.

The collaboration has also produced interactive story maps and a one-woman performance, bringing these women’s experiences to life in engaging and creative ways.

Now, members of the public are invited to discover what the project has uncovered and celebrate the people whose stories have shaped its journey.

The afternoon showcase will feature a short film highlighting the Trailblazing performance, alongside keynote speakers sharing insights into the project.

Visitors will also hear about the project’s main findings and highlights from the past three years.

There will be opportunities for people to connect with others, share their own memories and reflect on the experiences of women connected to the fire service.

The celebration will also provide an opportunity to recognise the importance of preserving and sharing these stories with the wider community.

Organisers hope the afternoon will bring people together through storytelling, learning and a shared appreciation of the past.

The event takes place in Peggie’s Room at The Old Fire Station, Gipton Approach, LS9 6NL, on Wednesday 4 November.

It will run from 1pm until 3.30pm, with lunch served from 1pm.

Anyone interested in attending is invited to RSVP to Coralie at coralied@space2.org.uk.
