A group of aspiring entrepreneurs from across Leeds have taken a significant step towards launching their own ventures after completing a two weekend training programme designed to build skills, confidence and long term ambition.
The course, delivered at the Leeds Media Centre in Chapeltown, brought together people at the earliest stage of their business journeys. Unity Enterprise, the not for profit arm of Unity Homes and Enterprise, used the programme to guide participants through the foundations of running a sustainable enterprise, with a strong focus on practical skills and clear planning.
The sessions began with an icebreaker to help people settle in before moving on to the building blocks of a strong business plan. Participants then explored the difference between aims and objectives and how multiple objectives can work together to support an overall ambition.
Adrian Green, Unity Enterprise Manager, said: “There was a wonderfully vibrant feel to the programme across both weekends. As well as developing a deeper appreciation of the ‘dos and don’ts’ of business on a practical level, the path to entrepreneurial success requires strong personal motivation rooted in a determination to succeed.”
He said that drive was clear throughout, adding: “This understanding was apparent in the demeanor of all who took part, alongside the build up of business knowledge accumulated across all sessions. I have no doubt that ‘Steps to Business’ will serve as the perfect launch pad for participants to follow their business dreams.”
Other modules in the course covered goods and services, consumers and producers, and the uses and benefits of a thorough SWOT analysis. The final sessions introduced pricing, marketing, budgeting and cash flow to help participants understand how day to day decision making underpins long term success.
Cedric Boston, Chief Executive of Unity Homes and Enterprise, said the programme reflects the organisation’s commitment to breaking down barriers and widening access to opportunity. He added: “We are firm in our belief that entrepreneurial talent is everywhere and regard it as our mission to combat inequality by delivering opportunities for people who have been denied the chances their ability deserves.”
