James BovingtonJoe Hardy didn’t take up boxing until 21 and now at 30 he’s fighting on the undercard at Leeds Arena. Hardy will meet rising prospect Barnsley’s Cory Sagar over four rounds.
“I love what I do and am grateful to my manager Kevin Maree and coach Nick Manners for the opportunity to fight at this major venue in my home city,” said Hardy for whom the Arena bout is 48th fight. “Growing up I played both rugby league and union eventually at elite amateur level with Garforth Tigers and Garforth RUFC. I started boxing with Lee Murtagh at Bethlehem Boxing Club. Lee’s always been encouraging.”
“I love what I do. Being what’s called the ‘away’ boxer. It’s given me so many opportunities including fighting men who’ve gone on to be highly successful boxers. When they start out and gain experience, they need an opponent. I’m ideal, apparently. I don’t even mind when the crowd’s against me. I enjoy walking out with adrenalin pumping. It’s exhilarating. The best thing is that the ‘home’ boxer is responsible for ticket sales. For me it’s ‘cash and dash.’”
A former student of Garforth Community College, Hardy and his partner live in Kippax. Hardy works full time as a self-employed sign fitter. “I entered the pro ranks in 2021 following a fifteen-win streak on the unlicensed scene. Fans will grasp what that means. I won an area title and boxed twice in Malta. I’m confident that after the Arena fight people will say I gave it my best shot and I entertained. My head’s in the right place for it.”
