In the heart of Harehills, a powerful sense of community is blossoming, and it’s all coming together for a very special day.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, 20th September, because The Compton Centre is transforming into a vibrant hub of eco-friendly inspiration and action for the “Our Planet, Our Neighbourhood” event.

From 11am to 3pm, this free, family-friendly community day invites everyone to learn, share, and act together for our planet. It’s more than just an event; it’s a chance to be part of the conversation and help shape a greener future for Leeds.

The event will also feature a short panel of local people speaking passionately about climate change and repair, followed by a presentation by

East Side Story, weaving together the narrative of our community and our environment.

The day will be buzzing with life and colour, thanks to an incredible eco street market hosted by Community Markets Leeds. Here, you can shop local and buy local from a wonderful array of eco-friendly vendors, reducing your carbon footprint while supporting passionate local makers.

But the event goes far beyond shopping. It’s a day of deep connection and big ideas:

  • Learn & Act: Visit the Climate Action Leeds stand to find out more about climate change and the practical steps we can take towards climate repair. Share your own ideas and be part of the solution.
  • Global Stories, Local Action: We’ll be sharing the experiences of families from overseas, connecting our local community to global environmental stories. Then, we’ll turn our gaze homeward and ask: “Imagine Leeds” – what would a truly green, eco-friendly city look like? Come and share your vision.
  • Creativity & Performance: Be captivated by a short performance and exhibition from the renowned Balbir Singh Dance Company. Explore the Leeds Libraries book stand for literary inspiration, and get creative at the “Patching up the Planet” workshop. This drop-in upcycling session, run by Esustainable Fashion, invites you to mend and beautify clothes with patches (feel free to bring your own fabric!).

The community spirit will be in full swing at the Harehills Action Team’s Chatty Cafe, where you can enjoy a warm drink and a snack while connecting with neighbours. You can also discover vital community services from organisations like Freedom 4 Girls, who will be raising awareness about eco-friendly period products.

For those with green fingers, you can take home a piece of the growth with herbs and bulbs generously donated by The Royal Horticultural Society. And to keep everyone energised, delicious food will be for sale by a vendor known as Proverbs 31.

This day is built by the community, for the community. Volunteers are welcome! If you can spare some time to help on the day, please get in touch. And if you are a maker or creator with an eco-friendly focus, there’s still time to join the market! For a stall, please contact Tasha Grant at communitymarketsleeds@gmail.com.

Join us for this unforgettable day of community, creativity, and climate action. Let’s reimagine our neighbourhood and our planet, together.
