Free MMA training course ahead of Leeds charity bout

Brothers Josh Tilley and Jack Alderson are urging east Leeds people to sign up for a free eight-week training course organised by Ultra MMA.

The course leads to an evening of amateur MMA bouts where ‘you’re treated in what we think it would be like in the UFC’ as participants demonstrate skills learnt while fundraising for their chosen charity.

In November thirty novice fighters raised over ten thousand pounds for a range of charities but particularly for mental health charity Mind. All enjoyed participating in the sell-out show at The Village in Headingley.

At 18 Jack was the youngest participant and remains enthusiastic about his performance.

“I felt proud walking to the cage.  I proved what I’m made of, that I have the courage required. It was a learning experience making me determined to continue combat sports. I was pleased to raise £ 250 for Prostate Cancer UK.”

Older brother Josh, 21, has had three Ultra MMA fights. “I’ve made friends on these shows which allow you to have a nice, good scrap legally. Deep mutual respect and friendships develop between the opponents. The atmosphere is fantastic. Give it a go!”

Lewis Horman, 23, joined Josh and Jack to make his MMA debut. “I enjoyed the whole thing,” said car fitter Lewis. “What an activity to bring you out of your comfort zone. It was excellent for my mental health. I raised money for Men’s Mental Health. The training was difficult. I was proud to get the win, and I know that with my opponent Saul Castel we put on a thrilling performance. I could never have seen myself doing this before, but I’ll be up for it again as it’s great for body and mind.”

Fighter safety is priority for former professional MMA fighter Karsten who both referees and judges the Leeds events.

“My job is to look after these novice fighters. This is the lowest level of MMA and competitors are inexperienced so no hitting to the head when on the canvas and no head kicks at all with punches to the face only when upright like in boxing. But for the fighters the show is an exhilarating experience as they’re treated like a rock star for the afternoon and the crowd goes crazy encouraging them on. Absolutely unforgettable.”

Training for the next show on 11th April starts on 17 February at Bad Company Gym in Bramley by which date those signing-up must be at least 18. Further information can be found atwww.ultra-mma.co.uk or by calling 07885 270267.
