For years, the quiet charm of Aberford has been a point of pride for those of us on the East side of Leeds. But that peace was shattered by the final reckoning of a man who spent decades hiding a grotesque past behind a suburban front door.
David Lawn, 62, formerly of St John’s Garth, was led away from Leeds Crown Court to begin a 20-year prison sentence. For many in this community, he was just another face in the village. But for one woman he was the face of a monster. A monster who was the architect of a “campaign of sickening abuse” that began in the 1990’s and stole her childhood.
A Shadow Lifted
The crimes Lawn was convicted of – included three counts of rape and twelve counts of indecent assault – were carried out over a six – year period. While the physical acts ended long ago, the victim, now thankfully the survivor, served a lifelong sentence in her own mind until she found the strength to step forward in 2021.
Her report sparked an intensive investigation by the West Yorkshire Police Safeguarding Unit. Despite the decades that had passed, the evidence was clear: Lawn had used his position of trust to inflict “profound and life-shaping” trauma.
“I Learned Fear Before Safety”
In a statement that left a courtroom still, the victim shared the heavy price of her silence. She spoke of how she “learned fear long before I learned safety” and she also described her exhausting journey of reclaiming her life. Her words serve as a chilling reminder that monsters often hide in plain sight.
Presiding Judge, Penelope Belcher was moved by the testimony. She noted that the “frightened child had finally been heard”. As Lawn watched via video link from HMP Leeds, the weight of justice has finally landed.
The judge handed Lawn a sentence of 20 years in prison, an additional year on licence and a lifelong placement on the sex offenders register.
For David Lawn, the quiet life in Aberford is over. For his victim, the shadows of St John’s Garth have finally been chased away by the light of the truth.
A Message to Our Community
At East Side Story News, we often celebrate the strength of our local villages. Today, that strength is found in the courage of a survivor who refused to let the past stay buried. Detective Constable Christine Walkin, who spearheaded the investigation, hopes this result serves as a beacon for others.
The survivor herself concluded, “I have a voice now. I have truth now. I have strength now. She [the child] is scared. I am not.”
