A driver remains in a critical condition in hospital following a serious road traffic collision in Allerton Bywater on Wednesday evening. West Yorkshire Police have launched an urgent appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage to help establish exactly what happened.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:45 pm on Wednesday, 14 October. Emergency services rushed to the scene after a red Toyota BZ4X veered off the carriageway on Station Road. The electric vehicle careened through the roadside boundaries and came to a rest in a dense, wooded area between the junctions of Station Terrace and Back Lane.
The driver, a man in his 50s, suffered severe injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police confirmed that he remains fighting for his life in a critical condition. Initial enquiries at the scene suggest that the man may have suffered a sudden medical episode while behind the wheel, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.
A passenger who was also inside the Toyota at the time of the crash was taken to hospital. Officers confirmed that the passenger was treated for injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Police are now trying to piece together the moments leading up to the crash and want to speak with anyone who was in the area at the time.
A force spokesperson said: “We would like to speak to anyone who has witnessed the collision or events leading up to it. Similarly, people are asked to check CCTV and dashcams to check if they have captured any relevant footage.”
Residents and motorists who were travelling along Station Road around 9:45 pm on Wednesday are urged to review their security setups or vehicle cameras.
Anyone with any information, video clips, or sightings of the red Toyota prior to the incident can contact the Roads Policing Unit through the West Yorkshire Police Live Chat facility or by calling 101, quoting log number 1778 of 14 October.
