Official Blue Badge Tourist Guide training has returned to Yorkshire for the first time since 2014.
The course is aimed at people interested in sharing Yorkshire’s history, heritage and stories with visitors.
Applicants are being sought from across the region, with people from West Yorkshire also being encouraged to apply.
Organisers are also seeking local people who speak other languages.
The move comes as Yorkshire’s tourism industry looks to meet growing demand from international visitors.
The programme will train a new group of professional guides covering attractions and stories across the region.
This includes subjects ranging from Roman roads and Viking legends to tours across the Yorkshire Dales.
Sarah Cowling, Course Director and Blue Badge Tour Guide, said: “Yorkshire has an extraordinary story to tell, but telling it well takes genuine craft. “
She added: “You don’t need a history degree to do this. We’re looking for personality, enthusiasm, and a deep love for the region.”
The accredited course is run by the British Guild of Tourist Guides.
It combines practical coach and walking tour training with historical studies and business masterclasses.
The training is designed to help graduates develop successful freelance careers.
Recruits will qualify for the York Green Badge by summer 2027.
This will allow them to earn while completing their full Yorkshire Blue Badge qualification.
Cowling said the work could offer a varied career, with guides working across different parts of Yorkshire.
“Being a Blue Badge Guide is one of the most varied jobs in the world – one day you’re taking a coach across the Dales, the next you’re leading a private tour through York Minster,” she said.
The course starts in January 2027.
Applicants should expect around 10 hours of private study each week.
This will be alongside taught sessions, site visits and practical training.
Applications are now open and close on Friday 9 October 2026.
Organisers say applicants do not need to be historians or experienced tour guides.
They are looking for curiosity, commitment, strong communication skills and a passion for Yorkshire and its stories.
