Crossgates is set to welcome a new night-time venue following the approval of plans to transform a vacant high street building.
Leeds City Council planning officers have given the green light for the former NatWest bank, located at the junction of Austhorpe Road and Station Road, to be converted into a brand-new bar.
The prominent building has stood empty since last year, when it was shut down as part of a wider wave of branch closures by the banking company.
According to the plans, the ground floor would be used as a bar, while parts of the building would also provide customer facilities and supporting space for the business.
If approved, the scheme would represent a significant change for one of Crossgates’ most recognisable commercial buildings.
Planning documents submitted to Leeds City Council set out how the property could be adapted for its new purpose while making use of the existing building.
The application is currently under consideration and a decision will be made by Leeds City Council at a later date.
The plans come as communities across the country continue to see former bank buildings repurposed for new uses, helping to bring empty premises back into active use and attract more visitors to local centres.
