Rohie N'DowLeeds played host to a landmark visit from the Senegalese Ambassador to the United Kingdom, General Cheikh Wade, who met with the city’s Senegalese community for the first time. The gathering marked a historic moment, strengthening the connection between Senegalese residents in Leeds and their embassy in London.
The visit also highlighted the presence of a thriving Senegalese community in East Leeds, which is actively engaged in promoting culture, heritage, and community connections across the city. Led by experienced local organisers, the community has previously played a key role in hosting events and initiatives that bring people together, reflecting both their vibrant culture and their strong ties within the wider Leeds African community.
The Ambassador was welcomed warmly by the community, with many expressing excitement at meeting him and his team from the Senegalese Embassy. Rohie N’Dow, president of the Senegalese Community Leeds, described the visit as “a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our culture and heritage, and to feel closer to our roots in Senegal,” adding, “Meeting the Ambassador in person has made us feel truly recognised and valued.”
In addition to the community gathering, the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Cllr Dan Cohen, hosted Ambassador General Cheikh Wade at Leeds Civic Hall for an official welcoming visit. The meeting highlighted the importance of cultural exchange and the city’s commitment to fostering strong international ties.
The visit was hailed as a major success, with both the ambassador and the local Senegalese community optimistic about future collaboration and engagement.
