Peace was shattered within the quiet suburb of Austhorpe, by the blue strobe lights of an emergency that left a community in shock.

At 5:55 am, while most of the city still slept, police were called to Kennerleigh Avenue. There, on a stretch of pavement near the heart of Crossgates, a young girl was found unconscious with injuries so severe she would never make it home.

Despite the frantic efforts of local neighbours performing CPR in a valiant attempt to keep her alive and the subsequent arrival of paramedics who continued the resuscitation attempts, the victim – now identified as 16-year-old Chloe Watson Dransfield from Gomersal – was pronounced dead shortly after arrival in hospital.

A Neighbourhood Under Guard

By midday, Saturday Kennerleigh Avenue had been transformed. Forensic officers in white suits meticulously combed the gardens and surrounding areas of the neat semi-detached homes. For residents the sight was surreal.

Police seal off the area where Chloe was failed

Local resident Wayne Mellows, 64, shared harrowing details of the attempt to save Chloe’s life. He said that he was alerted by a dog walker at approximately 5:50 am and at the scene he found a neighbour performing CPR on Chloe on the pavement. The neighbour’s phone was on the ground on loudspeaker, with ambulance control providing instructions.

As the neighbour grew tired, Mr Mallows took over the life-saving efforts, and he performed CPR for approximately 10 minutes until paramedics arrived. He described the scene as devastating, noting that Chloe had been stabbed in the back. Mr Mallows also stated that “This area is quiet and most people here are elderly and come here to retire.”

On Sunday, 29th March, Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Superintendent Marc Bowes said: “Following our appeal for further information yesterday, we have now identified the deceased as a 16-year-old girl from the Cleckheaton area. Her family have been informed, and we are supporting them as they try to come to terms with what happened”.

“Our inquiries into the incident which led to her death are continuing, and I would appeal again to anyone who was in the Kennerleigh Avenue area in the early hours of yesterday morning to come forward if they have any information which could assist our investigation.”

Four in Custody

The investigation moved with clinical speed. Within hours of discovery, police executed a warrant at a nearby property. Four individuals – two women aged 18, a 20-year -old man, and a 17-year-old boy – were led away in handcuffs.

As of Sunday evening, all four remained in custody. Detectives had been granted extra time to interview the suspects, as they attempt to determine exactly what led to the violence that erupted in the pre-dawn darkness.

The scale of the investigation has widened significantly over the past 48 hours. Following the fifth arrest of a 17-year-old boy on Monday 30th March   police also confirmed that a sixth person – an 18-year-old man from Leeds – has been detained on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning.

Two other teenagers previously arrested, an 18- year- old woman and a 17- year- old boy, have since been released on bail pending enquires.

Latest Legal Developments

Three teenagers have now been charged with the murder of 16 – year-old Chloe Watson Dransfield following the fatal stabbing. The accused include 18 – year – old Kayla Smith, 19 – year-old Archie Rycroft, and a 17-year-old boy whose identity remains protected by law.

The trio appeared at Leeds Magistrate’ Court on the morning of Tuesday, 31st March. They appeared together for the short hearing in the dock wearing grey prison-issued tracksuits and flanked by security officers. Emotional scenes unfolded in the public gallery with the defendants’ families, who were seen sobbing and weeping as the teenagers were brought into the courtroom.

District Judge Mark Daley informed the defendants that the charge of murder can only be tried at a crown court. He stated:     “You are all charged with murder. That can only be tried at the crown court, and only the crown court can decide whether to grant you bail or not. Therefore, there must be a hearing at the crown court very soon”.

Smith and Rycroft were remanded into custody, and the youth was moved to secure accommodation.

The Other Suspects

A fourth individual, an 18-year-old man from Leeds, remains in police custody on suspicion of murder. Two others – an 18-year- old man and a 17- year – old girl were released on bail pending further enquiries.

Another teenager, a 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder. On April 7, police confirmed that he had been released on bail also pending further enquiries.

Heartfelt Family Quotes

Chloe’s family has released moving tributes, describing their utter devastation:

From Chloe’s Mother: “My beautiful princess Chloe… You are my life, my world, my best friend… You are stunning, confident, loyal, honest and my family-originated princess. When you walk into any room it lights up with your bubbly personality”.

From Chloe’s Father and Extended Family: “We miss every single thing about her. She was beautiful, full of joy, she embraced life with such happiness, and she had her whole future ahead of her”.

A Cousin’s Tribute: “Hi, my name is Shantelle. I’m setting up a go fund me for my 16-year-old cousin whose life was sadly taken in tragedy. 16 years young, didn’t even make it to her 18th. Her whole life was taken in a flash over a boy. Her mum is distraught, she has left two younger siblings behind, she was sadly murdered. I wanted to create a ‘go fund me’ to help give her the best sendoff possible. She didn’t deserve this; she was so full of life. Such an innocent, beautiful soul taken too soon.”

While official floral tributes are beginning to appear at the edge of the police tape, the digital world is already mourning, but for one Leeds family, their world has stopped turning.
