East Leeds boxer Ellis Ward is frequently described as ‘the hottest prospect in Leeds at present’ and is busily preparing for his bout at Leeds Arena on 20th December.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for me to get on the undercard of the show which Callum Simpson is headlining as he fights Troy Williamson. I know Callum, we’ve been friends for some time. My manager Kevin Maree pushed for me to be on this show. It’s a blessing and I think of it as a reward for so much hard work. What a way to finish a successful boxing year. It’s massively exciting for a Leeds lad in his home city.”
Twenty-three-year-old welterweight Ward is undefeated in his five professional fights. He admits that at this stage in his career the Arena bout “presents something of a risk,” given that he and his opponent Barnsley’s Jake Jon Cleary, 28, are very evenly matched. “Both of us are still at the learning stage with area title bouts a possibility over the next couple of years. Unless it’s a draw someone’s ‘undefeated’ will go. I don’t intend for it to be mine.”
Father to a boy who’s nearly three and a former East Leeds Academy student, Ward works full time as a chemical factory machine operator. “I’m grateful to my family who’ve supported me and helped me develop my career and to all those who purchase tickets.”
Ward trains with Wayne Woods at his York Road gym. ‘I’ve coached Ellis since he was fourteen,’ said Woods. “Ellis has all the qualities required in a future champion but like all elite athletes he needs sponsorship to achieve his full potential.”
